A Lesson Plan of Unit Nine

Spare Time

Date:              April 13th .

Topics:           Hobbies & Doing Things

Teaching procedures:

Period 1

1.      Lead-in questions by the teacher

What do you usually do after school?

Do you go to evening classes?

What kind classes would you like to go to?

( introducing the following words : drama, photography, painting, pottery

 story writing,  making videos, dancing)

2.      Reading – Activity 1

Students read the poster on Page 66 and answer the following questions:

a.      What’s the poster for?

b.      What are the activities?

c.       Which ones do you like doing?

3.   Listening

Students listen to the tape and answer the question given in bold in Activity One.

4.      Vocabulary and structure – Activity 2 and 3

Students match the pictures and the hobbies. Teacher reads aloud the words if necessary and describes the feelings about  each hobby to set examples for the students by using the adjectives : creative, exciting, dangerous, boring, relaxing, expensive and difficult; and noun phrases: good fun, good exercise, etc.

Students tell their feelings about the hobbies to the class using the structure I think … is … .

Teacher gives feed-back and moves on to the next procedure

5.      Listening – Activity 4

Teacher introduces the structures and students listen to the tape and imitate the pronunciation and intonation.

6.      Speaking – Activity 5 and 6 (explanation given if necessary)

7.      Spelling  -- Activity 7, discovering language

Period 2

1.        Lead-in questions

a.        What do you usually do in your spare time?

b.        Do you like watching TV in the evening?

c.         Why do you like watching TV?

I like watching TV because it is ….

Teacher introduces the graph in Activity 8.

2.        Building up vocabulary -- Activity 9

3.        Speaking – Students do Activity 10 in pairs and the teacher checks learning in class  -- Activity 11.

4.        Writing – Activity 12  

Checking for learning

5.       Introducing the second topic – Doing Things

6.        lead-in questions:

a.        Look at the picture. What are the children doing?

b.        What is Sally doing

c.         What are you doing?

Teacher writes the structures on board.

7.        Listening and Reading – Activity 1

Task given before the activity. What does Sally say about her/ the children/ the baby?

8.        Introducing the verbs listen, fight, cry, eat

9.        Speaking – Activity 2. 

(Making sentences in the present progressive tense.)

Structures are stressed on board if necessary

10.    Consolidation of the present progressive tense. (do Activity 3 and 4)

11.    Speaking – Activity 5 and 6 in pairs.

12. Writing   --       Activity 7  and checking for learning.

13.  If time permits do Activity

Topic: Development,  Unit 9

Procedures

Period 1

1.        Lead-in questions:

Do you like …?

Why do you like…?

(running, playing tennis, playing squash, swimming, doing aerobics, etc.)

(introducing the picture to the students.)

2.        Speaking – Activity 1

Students work in pairs then check progress

3.        Listening – Activity 2

New words are introduced before listening and make sure the students know how to do the listening activity.

       After listening, check in class.

4.        Reading  – Activity 3

a.        Teacher introduces the reading task.

b.        Student work on their own.

c.         Teacher asks questions if necessary.

5.        Writing  – Activity 4

Read the advertisement and write a short letter to the company.

a.      Teacher makes sure that the students know how to write a letter.

b.      Teacher checks for progress.

Period 2

Revision and progress check on page 72 and 73. Procedures vary in different classes.
